Nearly 21 million Poles aged over 15 are physically active, according to a survey by pollster Kantar.

The frequency of exercise among the most active Poles is also growing -- 19 percent of them practice five times a week.

Poles most often opt for cycling, which this year has grown more popular than jogging, the study found.

However, despite the public's growing awareness of the positive impact of physical activity on health, one in three Poles still does not do any sports, the pollster said.

Poles remain one of the least physically active societies in the European Union, faring below the European average.

According to the Eurobarometer 2017 study, 71 percent of EU citizens are physically active.

Among the EU's 28 members, Poland is the sixth-lowest ranked country in terms of the percentage of the population that exercises regularly, ahead of only Portugal, Malta, Italy, Romania and Bulgaria, where the percentage of physically active people is 51 percent on average.

Meanwhile, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden boast an average of 94 percent.
