  • Poles return to romantic classic in a reading relay-race. Report by Michal Kubicki.
A marathon reading of Adam Mickiewicz’s Pan Tadeusz (or Master Thaddeus) took place in Poland, marking the 200th anniversary of the events described in the epic poem.

The reading started with President Komorowski, and was carried on by other politicians, as well as actors and artists.

The reading team included, among others, Stanisława Celińska, Andrzej Chyra, Krzysztof Globisz, Krystyna Janda, Olgierd Łukaszewicz, Andrzej Seweryn and Jerzy Trela. Noted Polish pianists provided the musical background of pieces by Fryderyk Chopin.

Polish fascination with Pan Tadeusz, a Romantic poem first published 1834 in Paris, continues till this day. Michal Kubicki reports on the secrets of Mickiewicz's hold on the Polish culture and eavesdrops on the reading, which continued until just before 1 a.m.
