Three Polish priests and two nuns have been honoured by Israel’s Yad Vashem institute, posthumously, for saving Jews during the Holocaust.

Israeli Ambassador to Poland, Zri Rav-Ner, who presented the medals at a ceremony at the seat of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, told Polish Radio in an exclusive interview that “it is important to show that so many people in the Church have been saving Jews when they risked their own lives, sometimes without special orders or instructions from anybody, but just because their own conscience and religious conviction made them do it”.

He adds that “It’s a moral duty for us, Israelis, Jews, to continue with his process [of awarding the Righteous among the Nations medals] and finding out all those people who saved Jews, even they are not alive; it’s also an educational duty”.
