As Slawek Szefs reports, Israeli artist Rutu Modan was honoured with top credits in the Best New Graphic Album category for “The Property”, published in both Hebrew and English as well as a Polish language translation.

It tells the story of a young Israeli woman on a trip to Warsaw with her grandmother Regina, at first, to find and reclaim property owned by the grandmother’s family before she left for Palestine when the Nazis invaded Poland. Soon, Regina’s motives turn out to be more complicated…

“Actually my intentions were to take stereotypes and break them. […] Stereotypes are based on some truth but when you look at them from close, it’s not so simple,” Rutu Modan told Polish Radio during the Eisner Awards presentation in San Diego, California.
