Tuesday’s opening of the new Museum of the History of the Polish Jews – Polin was attended by the presidents of both Poland and Israel, John Beauchamp reports.

Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin said during the opening that “this isn’t a museum of the Shoah, but a museum about life. It is a place which commemorates what was and what now will never be, as well as raising hopes for another future.”

For his part, Polish president Bronisław Komorowski underlined that at the end of the 18th century the majority of Jews in the world lived in what were then the territories of the Polish Republic, and it was this place where many of the founders of the Israeli state came from.

“It is impossible to fully experience Polish history without an awareness of the Polish Jews,” he said.
