US President Barack Obama met with representatives of immigrant societies at the Copernicus Center run by the Polonia diaspora on Tuesday, as John Beauchamp reports.

At the meeting, Obama raised immigration issues, and stood by his decision to legalise the stay of thousands of illegal immigrants in the country, including tens of thousands of Poles who live and work in the US.

Speaking at the Polonia-run Copernicus Center in Chicago, Obama kicked off the proceedings by greeting everyone in Polish. It is thought that over a million Polish Americans live in Chicago, making it the second largest “Polish” city in the world.

Before the meeting, Obama met with representatives from immigrant societies in Chicago, amoung them Grażyna Zajączkowska from the American Polish Association, who said that “this is a great step for the Polonia diaspora for the future, that we’ll have a much greater say and that our opinion on various matters will count for something.”
