From simply decorated school gyms the events have moved to posh restaurants and hotels much to the financial distress of many parents

It seems that the only elements reminiscent of the classical proms of yesteryear, or 'studniowka' in Polish (the name denoting 100 days left till the final exams), are the traditional 'polonaise' dance and obligatory red garters worn by the girls, symbolizing a passport to adulthood.
We shall also talk about the most popular names chosen by Polish parents and a government proposal for substantial hikes in fines imposed on speeding drivers.
