  • Migrant summit calls for EU border tightening
European leaders met in Brussels on Thursday to tackle the dire problem of migrants after 900 people or so travelling from North Africa went down with a single boat last Sunday on the Mediterranean Sea.

As Elżbieta Krajewska reports, just before the summit, the United Nations called on Europe to “go beyond the minimalist approach” as currently the focus was on “stemming the arrival of migrants and refugees on its shores”. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees called on the EU to focus on saving lives.

Some member states have already declared ships, helicopters and personnel to aid surveillance efforts – Poland will be sending up to 15 officers, “Border Guard officers will be sent as experts who will work with the identification of those who reach destinations such as Italy, Greece, Malta, where most arrive,” said Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.
