Over the weekend Poles will be going greener at various open-air festivities and educational events to celebrate Earth Day.

As Michał Owczarek reports, Earth Day is an annual event, held on 22 April, to demonstrate support and foster knowledge about environmental protection. It was first organised in 1970 in the USA. In Poland the first Earth Day was held 25 years ago. This year’s event focuses on renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. For the first time ever in Poland the initiative has gained the patronage of the Ministry of Environment.

“We are a country with the highest biodiversity and Poland is much richer than coutries in Western Europe. I’m very proud of this state of nature in my country. However the Polish society is not as concerned about ecology as people in other countries,” says Minister of Environment Maciej Grabowski.
