On July 10th, 1940 the British Royal Air Force started a fierce battle in defence of the United Kingdom against a total air strike by the Nazi Luftwaffe.

Polish pilots flying RAF fighters and bombers played a very important part in the effort.

Sadly, as Sławek Szefs reports, for many years their merit had mostly been passed over in silence by postwar British authorities and public opinion.

“A hundred and thirty nine Polish pilots took part […] on our side and they had a tremendously important role,” Richard Hunting from the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, told Polish Radio.

“In fact, I can say that without the Polish contribution the Battle may well have been lost,” he argued.
