The Polish government is having to revise new regulations banning junk food in schools owing to a beloved type of pastry.

The regulation that came into force in September outlawed sweet and sugary food, soft drinks, white bread and salt not only from tuck shops but also school canteens, in a bid to encourage healthier eating habits among the youngest part of the Polish population.

Symbolic of the protests became the so-called drożdżowka, which is made of a sweet bread-like yeast dough with a variety of fillings from poppy seeds and jam to custard and cheese.

It turned the tables, so to speak, and the new regulations proved more than some students as well as parents could stomach.

Elżbieta Krajewska reports.
