Poland's president Andrzej Duda signed new legislation which extends the authorities' surveillance powers despite fears that it undermines privacy.

As Michał Owczarek reports, the amendments are said to enable law enforcement services to access digital data more freely while loosening the legal framework for administrative supervision over surveillance.

Poland's opposition parties and rights groups, including Amnesty International, have claimed the amendments deeply encroach into citizens' privacy, especially when it comes to internet use.

"The Police and other public services need to be bolstered with tools to help combat organised crime. And that’s the target of this regulation. It’s a police law not a surveillance law,” said Deputy Culture Minister Jarosław Sellin.
