The Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s human rights watchdog, said on Friday that recent laws pushed through by the Law and Justice (PiS) government endanger democracy.

It demanded an end to the row over the Constitutional Tribunal and called on the current leadership to publish a recent ruling by Poland’s top court.

Agnieszka Łaszczuk reports on whether there is a way to end the standoff.

“The opinion of the Venice Commission is not a verdict, but of course we will analyse it carefully,” Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said.

Following, the publication of the report, Ryszard Petru, leader of the Modern party, warned that it “could affect Poland’s image.”

Another opposition politician, Paweł Kukiz, called on both government and opposition politicians to “find a compromise as soon as possible”.
