A 2013 report by the European Environment Agency found that the southern Polish city of Kraków had the third most polluted air of nearly 400 cities across Europe.

To battle the city’s heavy pollution, a grass-roots movement called Kraków Smog Alert was founded in 2012, aiming to educate residents about the dangers of so-called low-stack emissions - those coming from the burning of coal in household stoves.

The campaign has become increasingly popular, attracting support from celebrities including Kraków-based film director Andrzej Wajda, the winner of an honorary Oscar.

Most recently Kraków Smog Alert has been awarded the title of Poland’s Environmental Person of the Year 2015. Michał Owczarek spoke to awardees Anna Dworakowska and Andrzej Guła.

“It’s really a great honour but now we feel obliged to work further to have clean air in Poland in the near future,” Guła said.
