PM Abe is currently on a week-long trip through Europe in preparation for Japan hosting the G7 Summit on 26-27 May 2016 at Kashiko Island, and meeting with EU leaders for talks on the Japan-EU economic partnership agreement.

Japan and the then-European Community began holding annual high-level meetings in 1991, and free-trade talks were launched in 2013 with the goal of reaching an agreement by last year.

But the two sides are still negotiating over tariff elimination or reductions in such areas as food, beverages and cars.

The EU is Japan’s major trading and investment partner, contributing to some 10 percent of Japan’s total trade volume.

"The EU is the biggest trade entity in the world, Japan is the third largest economy, it is also a big democracy in Asia, so you can cooperate on all aspects," Silviu Jora, from the EU Delegation to Japan, told reporter Danuta Isler.
