German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is meeting 15 European leaders this week, is also visiting Poland, officially to prepare for the Bratislava summit.

According to experts, however, the German leader is trying to keep various groups within the EU together, following Britain’s vote to leave the bloc.

Agnieszka Łaszczuk takes a closer look at the goals and expectations of the Visegrad Group ahead of Friday’s meetings and the upcoming EU summit.

In an interview with the PAP news agency Daniel Bartha, from the Centre for Euro-Atlantic Integration and Democracy, pointed to the fact that Britain could have been a potential ally in “an approach to review the [EU] treaties and provide more powers to national governments.”

Vit Dostal, from the Association for International Affairs, said that in terms of labour migration, “the stakes of the V4 countries are very high,” and “the way the V4 negotiates with Britain will show how strong it really is.”
