As the Polish foreign minister said, the visit was a “reconnaissance mission”, to gauge the situation following the failed coup in Turkey.

While Romania's Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu underlined that Turkey was a strategic partner of NATO and a key partner for the EU, there were words of support for Turkey's membership in the European Union both from the Romanian and Polish side.

“Europe right now is needed by Turkey, and vice versa, for security reasons we are partners who need each other,” said Witold Waszczykowski.
