In addition, Polish football star Robert Lewandowski has been named the world’s seventh-best striker in a ranking by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Legia Warszawa team advanced to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, and despite a troubled beginning, it secured a spot in the Europa League after beating Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon 1:0.

Jerzy Dudek, a former goalkeeper for the Polish team who also played for Real Madrid and Liverpool, said: "It was an amazing year when it comes to our football players' performance. Our national team did not play that well since 1982."

Dudek added: "Legia Warszawa also managed to play in the Champions League. What more could a football fan want?"
