Last June Wojciech Balczun was appointed CEO of the Ukrainian state-owned railway company Ukrzaliznycia, the first-ever foreigner to take on the role.

But the level of corruption he found there was something he had not expected. In a recent interview for Polish Radio he talked about his determination to eradicate shady practices in the company.

“Assuming this post eight months ago, I realised I would have to face that problem but I underrated its scale. Ukrzaliznycia is under heavy pressure from those who treat it as one of the last corrupt reservoirs to be taken advantage of,” Balczun said.
