  • Polish president unveils judicial reform proposals
Poland’s president Andrzej Duda on Monday proposed changes to the country’s constitution, after a row over sweeping legal changes that provoked protests at home and warnings from Brussels.

The new proposals strengthen the president’s role but also could address the European Union’s concerns over the Polish government's plans to put courts under its political control.

“Judges should be elected with a cross-party majority, so that one party cannot decide who will be a judge on the National Council of the Judiciary,” Duda said.

Michał Owczarek reports.
