A Polish expedition to K2, the world’s second-highest peak in the Karakoram mountain range of the Himalayas, has reached its base camp at an altitude of 5,150 metres.

K2 is the last of the eight-thousanders yet to be conquered in winter. The team is led by Krzysztof Wielicki, a 67-year-old climber who has scaled all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters.

“It will be difficult, I know,” said Wielicki, referring to the attempt. “I have made two winter attempts and I know what this means, but we hope everything will go fine.”

While a Polish team is again setting out to climb K2 in winter, “our Western colleagues do not want to try,” he added.
