The move aims to encourage Poles to move away from using coal furnaces, one of the main sources of smog which, according to estimates, kills some 50,000 Poles each year.

Polish Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski has also announced a plan to introduce special night electricity tariffs, which, compared "to the current day tariff... might be up to ten times cheaper."
