A Polish mountaineering team that was attempting to conquer the summit of K2, the world’s second-tallest mountain, in winter has decided to discontinue its expedition.

The climbers said on Monday the decision to call off their attempt was due to heavy snowfall and ominous weather forecasts.

“We had to take this decision given our slim chance of reaching the summit and the risk for the climbers,” said team leader Krzysztof Wielicki.

“Safety is the top priority for me,” he added.

The K2 peak, in the Karakoram mountain range of the Himalayas, rises 8,611 metres above sea level and is the last of the world's eight-thousanders yet to be conquered in winter.
