Thursday, April 19, saw many ceremonies to remember the 1943 revolt, in which Jewish fighters took up arms against Poland’s German invaders during World War II.

The commemorations were attended by top officials as well as the people of Warsaw, and culminated in a concert at Warsaw’s Monument to the Ghetto Heroes.

Daffodils are associated with noted ghetto fighter Marek Edelman, who before his death in 2009 placed daffodils at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes each year on the anniversary of the uprising.

The flowers mark a poignant contrast with the yellow stars that Jews were made to wear during the Nazi German occupation of Poland.
