After nearly 75 years Poland has recovered a historical archive documenting an effort in which its diplomats based in Switzerland helped rescue Jews from the Holocaust during World War II.

The Bern Group of diplomats, led by Aleksander Ładoś, the Polish ambassador to Switzerland at the time, produced fake passports of Latin American countries to help Jews escape from Poland at a time when the country was under Nazi German occupation.

The so-called Eiss Archive obtained by Poland’s government contains such fabricated passports, in addition to previously unused photographs and correspondence between the Polish embassy in Bern and Jewish organisations.
