The National Opera in Warsaw has just opened a new production of Manru by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, commemorating this great artist who was also one of the forces behind Poland's recovery of independence in 1918. Manru, which tells the story of an ill-fated love between a Highland girl and a Gypsy man, is a strong statement on racial problems - says Marek Weiss, who staged the work for the National Opera. Elżbieta Krajewska is also talking to director of the Grand Theatre National Opera Waldemar Dąbrowski, explaining why the theatre is holding a "Paderewski Festival" dedicated to this great man.
