According to police data, 74 rapes were recorded in Polish schools in 2012, as opposed to 14 in 2011.

The statistics only include instances where the crimes went to court, and they cover primary schools and so-called gymnasiums (the equivalent of the American junior high).

The Rzeczpospolita daily, which obtained the police data, also drew attention to a recent case that is due to be tried by a court in Lublin, south east Poland.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly dragged to school lavatories by three older boys. A gynaecologist and psychiatrist both submitted reports confirming rape, and the matter is due to go before a Lublin family court.

Although the statistics predominantly pertain to crimes committed by pupils, they also include some instances of rape by adults, including paedophiles who have trespassed onto school property. (nh)
