Jaroslaw Gowin, the former justice minister who left the ruling Civic Platform earlier this month to become an independent MP, announced on Monday that he has set up a team to create a new vision for Polish politics.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Jaroslaw Gowin said that “the logic of Polish politics should be turned around,” adding that there is too much emphasis on party politics and too little time dedicated to an overall programme.

“Today I would like to start work on a new programme of governance for Poland for the years 2015-19,” Gowin announced, adding that he has invited a number of “outstanding experts” to act as consultants.

Gowin’s team includes economist and deputy finance minister Prof. Stanislaw Gomulka; demographer Prof. Krystyna Iglicka-Okolska; the former head of the Chamber of Physicians and Dentists Dr. Konstanty Radziwill; Prof. Wojciech Maksymowicz, former health minister in the government of Jerzy Buzek in the late 1990s; Prof. Stanislaw Karpinski, former deputy education minister; and Pawel Dobrowolski, head of the FOR Civil Development Forum.

Asked whether work on the new programme would lead to the formation of a new party, Gowin replied that “this is a very loose structure, and every expert is independent,” adding that apart from posting progress on a dedicated website, “the next steps will be presented in [the southern city of] Krakow this Saturday.”

Gowin underlined that he is not planning to start up a new political party in the coming months, as “the order should be reversed.”

“The foundation has to be a programme which has its carrier through a social movement numbering thousands of people who want to engage in public life,” Gowin said, adding that “it is this group which will take the decision on the formation of a new political party.”

Jaroslaw Gowin stated that his aim is to receive 20 percent of the vote in the next general elections, to be held in 2015. (jb)
