Gas blast kills two in western Poland

UPDATE - A huge explosion killed two people and set fire to buildings in the village of Janków Przygodzki, around 100 kilometres from Poznan, western Poland on Thursday afternoon.

Eight, including two children, were also injured in the blast and were taken to hospital in nearby Ostrow Wielkopolski, after what the Interior Ministry has said was a gas leak from a pipeline.

Police cordoned off the area and evacuated dozens of residents of the small village in the Wielkopolska province.

"Approximately 10 to 12 residential buildings are on fire and are seriously damaged," spokesman for the Ostrow Wielkopolski fire service, Krzysztof Biernacki told the PAP news agency.

The fire caused by the explosion, which occurred around 12.00 CET, was visible from at least six kilometres away, according to reports. (pg)
