3D printer gives hope to beakless penguin

A 3D printing firm from Poznan is helping create a prosthetic beak after a penguin at Warsaw Zoo lost its pecker in a scrap with another penguin.

The luckless bird - not just flightless but beakless - has been struggling to eat properly and preen itself since the fight earlier this month, and a handmade replacement soon fell off.
However, Poznan firm Omni 3D, which manufactures 3D printers, believes that hope is not lost for the bird.
The company will scan the original beak from twelve different angles so as to achieve a precise simulation.
The scans will then be used to create a prosthetic beak made from plastic.
Although 3D printers have yet to be used in Poland for such purposes, the technology helped make a prosthetic beak for a bald eagle that had been shot by a poacher in the US in 2012. (nh/pg)
