In a statement released on Monday evening, police noted that a 28-year-old woman from Belchatow had been involved in a road accident with a 25-year-old man.

The latter, who was driving a Ford Fiesta, apparently rammed into the woman's Opel Vectra on Sunday afternoon.

“The behaviour of the culprit after the incident and his statements addressed to the victim suggested that he was inebriated,” police say.

“At that moment, some men that the victim did not know came up to the participants in the collision and got into a quarrel with the 25-year-old.

“Next they attacked him, both punching and kicking him, and then jumping up and down on his body.”

According to the police statement, the attackers fled the scene when the man lost consciousness.

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital but he died soon afterwards as a result of his injuries. Doctors confirmed that he had been under the influence of alcohol.

Shortly afterwards, five men were arrested, all of whom also tested positive for alcohol.

The men could face up to ten years in prison, if found guilty of beating the man to death. (nh)
