A car thief got more than he bargained for when he stole a jeep at a petrol station near Olsze, northern Poland, without realising that a 13-year-old girl was asleep on the back seat.

The owner of the car was paying for petrol at the station on the A1 motorway when the 20-year-old culprit slipped into the unlocked Subaru.

Finding the keys in the ignition, the intruder drove off in the direction of Gdansk.

“I was woken up by the car jerking from side to side,” the teenager recounted after the incident.

“The first thing I saw was an arm. It was an unfamiliar arm, as Dad was dressed differently.”

The teenager pretended to remain asleep and managed to send a text message.

“I got a message from my daughter: 'Mum, I've been kidnapped,'” the teenager's mother said.

Not long after the driver realised that there was still a passenger in the vehicle, and he let the girl out of the car near the town of Pelplin.

However, fortune was not in his favour and he crashed the Subaru near Swarozyn and was arrested shortly afterwards while trying to make his getaway on foot.

“No one would imagine that such a thing could happen at a petrol where there are lots of people and cameras,” the girl's father commented. (nh)
