A recent poll has put the ruling Civic Platform party ahead of the opposition Law and Justice party.

According to TNS Polska pollsters, Civic Platform can currently count on 34 percent of voters, versus 28 percent for Law and Justice.

An earlier TNS Polska poll from July had given Law and Justice a twelve point lead over Civic Platform, while other polls earlier this year also had Law and Justice in first place.

It is thought that the appointment of Civic Platform’s leader and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as President of the European Council, was responsible for narrowing the difference between the parties.

The survey also put the Democratic Left Alliance on nine percent, the libertarian-right Congress of the New Right on five (down five points since June) and the junior coalition partner Polish People’s Party also on five percent.

Poland will have local elections later this autumn and both parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for next year. An early election following Donald Tusk’s resignation is now considered unlikely. (sl/jb)
