Health and safety officers and technical staff will now make inspections, to be completed within 37 days, says a statement by the local authority.

It is understood, Polish Radio's IAR news agency reports, that the Civic Platform party, which has a majority on the local council, would like to see the metro's second line up and running by mid-November, or in time, say critics, for key local elections and the attempt by Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz to secure a third term in office.

The first, north to south, section of the metro line was opened in 1995, which was gradually extended until it reached its full length in October 2008.

A section of the second line, including the “Stadion' station near the new National Stadium, was hoped to have been completed for the Euro 2012 football tournament, though successive delays scuppered the plan.

The second line, with most of the funding supplied by the EU and which will take passengers under the Vistula river, includes stations Rondo Daszyńskiego, Rondo ONZ, Świętokrzyska, Nowy Świat, Powiśle, Stadion and Dworzec Wileński. (pg)
