The local council of a small town outside Lodz has caused a stir felt around the world after it stopped a playground being named after story-book favourite Winnie the Pooh.

The character, which in Poland is known as Kubus Puchatek, has been deemed a “hermaphrodite” and immoral, dressed only from the waist up, the council in Tuszyn (pop. 7,200) has decreed.

They have decided to name the playground Mis Uszatek after a character from a Polish TV series which ran in the mid 70s to the late 80s. The new character is completely covered up in smart trousers and shirt.

“[Winnie] does not have a complete wardrobe, so Mis Uszatek is a better namesake. Ours is dressed from head to toe, while Pooh only from the waist up,” said Tuszyn councillor Ryszard Cichy.

Nevertheless, Winnie the Pooh remains a popular character in Poland.

Since 1954, Central Warsaw has had its very own street named after the honey-guzzling bear (Ulica Kubusia Puchatka), with the name chosen in a public poll. (rg)
