Although rebuilding has yet to begin in earnest, a temporary roof structure has been installed, with netting ensuring that debris does not fall into the nave.

A fire in the early hours of 29 October tore through the roof, while also damaging wall paintings.

Since the disaster, over 540,000 zloty [about 128,719 euro] have been collected across the diocese from members of the public.

''I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have rushed to provide help, both spiritual and material, in saving our Sosnowiec cathedral,'' said Bishop Grzegorz Kaszak.

''You are really wonderful,'' he added.

Local authorities have also pledged assistance, and the Ministry of Culture is supporting the campaign to restore the building.

Several million zloty will be needed to complete the work, and until the roof has been reconstructed, masses will only be held on Sundays.
