INTERACTIVE: Poland’s lung cancer deaths among EU highest

As many as a quarter of deaths in the EU caused by cancer, says Eurostat, with Poland faring among the worst countries in terms of lung-cancer fatalities in the 28-nation bloc.

In 2001, as many as 24.1 percent of deaths in the country were related to the disease. The country tied with Greece, but followed Belgium (24.5 percent), the Netherlands (24.6 percent) and Hungary, the worst affected with 26.1 percent.

For Poland, this was a significant improvement since 2002, when the country led the charts with as many as 24.5 percent of all deaths due to lung cancer.

On the contrary, Poland fares better than most in all other cancer deaths. In 2011, 4.4 percent of all deaths in the country were due to prostate cancer, while the disease caused 7.6 percent of all deaths among males. This statistic placed the country fourth best in Europe.

The Big Picture

In terms of cancer deaths, Poland fares in the middle with 92,270 cases in 2011. France and Spain had 155,160 and 105,432 deaths respectively. (rg/jb)
