Siemoniak made the announcement while meeting commanding officers in Chelm, eastern Poland, on Thursday.

The declaration follows on from a similar statement Siemoniak made at the end of October, when he said that Poland will consolidate its military presence in the east of the country, but that the programme will be “spread over many years”.

“It just so happens that most of our bases are in the west of the country, with some 80 percent of the army based there,” Siemoniak said, stating that “we should move that balance to the east”.

However, Siemoniak did not reveal any futher details, suggesting only that “we want to base [investments] on already existing infrastructure, upgrade it, move over equipment and develop the army there”.

“It is still too early to mention the details,” he added, saying that the plans were part of a new security package which is to be disclosed by Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.

“This is a serious decision which will involve investments amounting to millions and tens of millions in expenditure,” Siemoniak said, underlining the long-term nature of the programme.

“The east needs investment,” Poland’s defence minister emphasised. (jb)
