In some areas gusts exceeded 100 km/h, with the Western Pomerania, Wielkopolska, Silesian and Mazovian regions bearing the brunt of the weather front.

A number of trees were uprooted as a result of the freak weather.

In the southern city of Krakow, winds tore down a 21-metre Christmas tree outside the Papal Window just a couple of hours after being decorated and lit in a ceremony by Krakow Archbishop, Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz.

“The 21-metre spruce was blown over by winds at around 7.40pm [local time], damaging two cars parked nearby,” said Major Marcin Wolanin from the Malopolska State Fire Brigade in Krakow, adding that no one was injured. (jb)
