The 28-year-old faces up to three years in gaol, Polish Radio reports. He has no education, profession or permanent address.

In court the defendant entered a guilty pledge but declined to ask any questions.

He was staying at a friend’s house when he killed his dog during his absence.

He could not explain his actions to the police. He said only he was drunk and under the influence of legally obtained psychoactive substances. He also expressed his regrets.

Animal rights campaigners have hired a lawyer to demand maximum penalty of three years in gaol for the defendant. Campaigners also held a demonstration outside the court building in Wloclawek, central Poland. (an)
