The farmers are protesting against government plans to build a lignite mine in Oczkowice, in the Wielkopolska region.

The protesters, who numbered around a thousand, held banners which read, “Coal from Silesia, bread from Wielkopolska”.

“We are determined, because only one step separates us from the construction of the mine. This is the last moment to defend ourselves and act,” said Sylwia Maćkowiak from the Nasz Dom association.

Traffic on the DK5 road between Rydzyna and Kaczkowo had returned to normal Tuesday evening. (rg)
