A Polish branch of Sotheby's International Realty has had offices in Warsaw since 2014, although the capital only came in fourth in the ranking.

Second place went to the Tri-City conurbation of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, and third was taken by Wrocław in Lower Silesia.

Bydgoszcz, branded "the Polish Amsterdam" by Sotheby's, was a surprise hit, coming in fifth, while the historic and affluent city of Poznań did not even make the top ten.

The former industrial powerhouse of Łódź , which was described as having "exceptional character", was ranked sixth.

Toruń, the pictureque city associated with astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, came in seventh, followed by Lublin in eighth, with Sotheby's praising the latter's ''magical alleys.''

The small riverside town of Kazimierz Dolny, long a favourite with weekenders from Warsaw, came ninth on the list, while the final place was taken by Zakopane, Poland's winter capital. (nh)
