Piotr S. (name withheld under Polish privacy laws) had apparently discovered his 29-year-old former partner in the company of another man on Tuesday.

It has been reported that Piotr S. initially attacked his rival, who then fled the hostel room to get help.

According to Deputy Inspector Bogusław Chmielarz, the attacker then barricaded himself in the room.

''Police broke down the door,'' Chmielarz told the Dziennik Polski daily.

''The woman was lieing on the floor, and was probably already dead,'' he added.

''The man was overpowered.''

According to the deputy inspector, the victim had suffered about 10 stab wounds. A knife was seized at the site.

''The perpetrator was sober, but we are investigating whether he was under the influence of other intoxicating substances.'' (nh)
