Wojciech Modesto Amaro, the celebrity chef behind Warsaw's Atelier Amaro, stressed in an interview however that the president and his wife were not physically turned away from the door.

''The president's office telephoned us and asked if we had a free table that day,'' Amaro said.

''There wasn't one, because after all I couldn't cancel someone else who had been waiting for three months,'' the chef and TV personality explained.

''In such cases I am inflexible,'' Amaro added.

The chef said that he pencilled the president in for a week later but that the head of state did not appear. (nh)
