With speculation rampant for the reasons of his disappearance, the Presidential Chancellery offered an unexpectedly down-to-earth explanation for his low profile.

“The president is growing back his moustache,” the source said. “It doesn’t look too good for the first few days, so he’s staying inside the palace.”

President Komorowski shaved off his signature moustache at the beginning of 2013 in a bid to shed off his image as a hunting country gentleman out touch with the modern day.

But opinion polls show the move has unexpectedly backfired.

“Old-school is now in fashion,” the source close to the president said. “Hipsters were put off by the president going mainstream. And with his facial hair back, Bronek [as the president is known to friends] will win over older ladies from [the conservative opposition Law and Justice] PiS”. (an/jb)
