Body of pregnant woman found in Vistula river

The remains of Elżbieta Bagniewska, a 35-year-old pregnant woman from Świecie who was reported missing in February, have been found downstream near Tczew, northern Poland.

The woman’s remains were found on the banks of the Vistula in Lisewo Malborskie, with prosecutors from Malbork now looking into the case.

On Monday, police from Bagniewska’s hometown – over 100 km away from where the body was found – wera notified of the find, with the family confirming her identity.

Elżbieta Bagniewska was reported missing in February, after she did not return home after evening Mass. She had left home without taking any documents, money or her mobile telephone with her.

Prosecutors are now waiting for an autopsy on the body to determine the cause of death. Bagniewska was nine months pregnant when she disappeared. (jb)
