The statistics, which were compiled by CERT Polska (Computer Emergency Response Team), are part of a broader study that will be published on the institution's website over the coming days.

"If we assume that there is one computer for every inhabitant of Poland, then we can say that the results for 2014 show that a city the size of Katowice is infected daily by viral programmes,'' commented Piotr Kijewski, head of CERT Polska.

According to the research, 4 in 10 of the most common threats were aimed at people using online banking services.

''The increase in cyber activity directed at online bankers is in our opinion the most important and the most disturbing trend of the previous year, resulting in a real loss of money," Kijewski stressed. (nh)
