The man was shot after he tried to grab one of the police officers’ guns after being interrogated over a case of alleged burglary.

“While signing the protocol after having been questioned, the 29-year-old tried to grab a gun belonging to a police officer,” Joanna Kącka from Łódź Police regional HQ told broadcaster TVP Info.

“Then a fight broke out in which a few shots were fired, which unfortunately were lethal,” she added, saying that there were no witnesses at the scene of the incident.

Kącka said that even though the man was attended to immediately by medics, the man died from the gunshot wounds.

A prosecutor’s team is currently investigation the scene and police in the regional hub of Łódź are looking into the case.

The man, a resident of Kutno, was well-known by the local police, and had been taken into custody a number of times before Thursday’s incident, Kącka said. (jb)
