“The drilling is being carried out without any problems, although it is still going through earth and we haven’t hit the layers of rock yet,” spokesman for mine owner Katowicki Holding Węglowy Wojciech Jaros said on Saturday morning.

Emergency efforts have been ongoing continuously for eight days following an earthquake at the mine, with two miners not reporting back to the surface after an evacuation.

One level of the mine has been taken out of action due to the rescue efforts, although mining continues at 865 and 1,050 metres below the surface.

On Friday, represenatatives of the Łódź Waterworks informed that the Wujek rescuers had asked them for help, as the central city has a remote-controlled TV inspection apparatus which can be used at such depths.

The search continues. (jb)
