Overall, police reported 310 accidents across the country, and 1200 people were apprehended for drink-driving.

Although the figures take in Thursday, when many Poles set off on their travels, the worst day on the roads was Friday 1 May, the first official day off in in the annual sequence of three public holidays.

Friday's toll was exacerbated by heavy rainfall in many places, with 10 people killed and 95 injured.

The most drunk drivers were stopped on Sunday (384), followed by Friday (330).

Despite police appeals, the death toll was worse than over the Easter break (also 4 days), when there were 217 accidents, killing 23 and injuring 300. (nh)
